Sailing through the Jungle Nursery

Welcome to my new favourite room in our home: Emmett’s sailing through the jungle nursery.

If you’ve been following along with my blog and Instagram, you’ll know I adore whimsical kids’ decor. I’m enamoured by children’s ability to see the magic in everyday moments and love creating spaces as special as them.

After Emmett was born and we found out he was a boy, I decided it was time to add a little extra charm to his white and grey gender-neutral nursery.

I had a fabulous starting point to work with. While pregnant, I worked alongside The Brick and styled some of their gorgeous nursery furniture – including this matching white crib and dresser, grey chair, plush rug and gold-tone mirror. But I purposefully left the walls bare and accent decor minimal in anticipation of some gender-specific details.

So, I did what I always do and creeped the Internet hard for some must-have pieces! Aaron did too, actually, and we each found something we loved that came together to form our sailing through the jungle nursery theme!

Let’s check out all the details (and for my American friends who’ve asked, here are some similar furniture pieces for you):

My Find: Watercolor Vine Wallpaper

If you’ve checked out our playroom or Elle’s nursery, you may have noticed I kinnnnnnd of have a thing for Rocky Mountain Decals. Their wallpapers and decals come in the most swoon-worthy patterns and watercolor tones.  Plus, they’re peel-and-stick, meaning you can remove them easily without causing damage to the walls underneath. I find this especially desirable when designing nurseries as, chances are, you’ll switch things up a bit when transitioning to a big kid bedroom.

I was looking online and it was love at first sight when I spotted the rainforest wall mural. Can you blame me?! The muted colors and imaginative design are perfect.

The Rocky Mountain Decals team worked with me directly to custom-fit this piece to our walls, taking the wainscoting into consideration, and I couldn’t be happier!

Aaron’s Find: Whimsical Sail Decor

Aaron had a similar love at first sight moment when he spotted this Dreams Ahead Sail Canopy at Pottery Barn Kids. He’s always loved pirates, so it seemed like a fitting piece for Emmett’s nursery.

The sail itself is 56” high and 45” wide so it’s quite large, making it a show-stopping focal element. Plus it’s soft, billowing fabric helps create a restful, dreamy mood in the room.

Gold Light Switches and Power Outlets

Last summer we outfitted our kitchen, dining room and living room with sleek light switches and power outlets from the adorne Collection by Legrand.

I’m obsessed with their gorgeous aesthetic and functionality and knew I wanted to upgrade Em’s room, too.

I once again chose the user-friendly Touch Switch. It functions just like an iPhone and turns on and off with a simple touch. It’s a small detail that adds SO much convenience when you’ve got a baby in one arm and a toddler climbing up the other!

When it came to power outlets, I chose the standard outlet. See how the plugs are placed diagonally instead of vertically – talk about smart!

What really sets apart the adorne Collection by Legrand, though, is their sleek and sophisticated wall plates. They’re pretty – like, SO pretty – and can either stand out or seamlessly blend in with your decor  (like in my kitchen).

When it came to Emmett’s nursery, I knew I wanted to make a statement and looked into Legrand’s custom wall plates and luxury metals collection.

The Custom Wall Plates are a designer’s dream come true. You can customize them with paint, wallpaper or fabric.

The result? A one-of-a-kind wall plate that’s so easy to create. I definitely loved the idea of tying in some of the watercolor wallpaper or a jungle-themed design.

In the end, though, I decided to go with the Brushed Brass Wall Plates. I’d been admiring them for over a year and decided this was the perfect opportunity to go for the gold, given that I’d already introduced it as an accent color in the mirror and drape rods.

They’re so swoon-worthy, right?!

Custom Jungle Art

Okay, how cute is this print?

I had it custom made by the talented Beloved Boutique. Bavy was an absolute pleasure to work with. I described the style of font and greenery I was hoping for and she nailed it! Plus, there’s nothing wrong with a little rock and roll in your son’s room!

Gold Light Fixture

Once I decided on the gold wall plates, I went hunting for a flush mount light fixture to match.

I’m really loving this ornate light with clear seeded glass panels I found on Wayfair. It lets off the perfect amount of light for a bedroom and looks good doing it!

Paint Color

I adore the paint color we chose for above the wall panelling. It’s Lace Falls by General Paint (which, by the looks of it, was since bought out by Sherwin-Williams). I’ve found a few websites suggesting comparable tones in other brands and it appears Behr’s Shiny Luster is a close match (and available in a multitude of finishes).

Jungle Nursery Accents

If there’s one thing that I’ve learned about kids’ rooms, it’s that they fill up quickly. So I decided to add a little fun jungle flair without going overboard.

The perfect accents: this tabletop giraffe, elephant head wall art, large plush crocodile and giraffe storage basket.

The Llama

Okay, so yes – I’m completely aware that llamas live in mountainous regions and not the jungle. BUT we bought this jumbo llama for the nursery while I was pregnant because Elle wanted it for the baby. Plus, at 24” tall he’s quite large and a fun addition to the space.
