Wondering what interior design trends you can expect to see in 2022? Today I’m catching up with Jennifer Hughes, owner of Turquoise Chair – an Edmonton-based design and staging business – to find out what’s hot in 2022.
Her work will be on display this upcoming weekend, January 28th through 30th, at the Edmonton Renovation Show.
After a two-year pandemic hiatus, the Show is BACK and Jennifer will be lending her talents to designing the Sleep Country Main Stage where attendees will hear from three expert speakers:
-
- HGTV Canada celebrity contractor Bryan Baeumler,
- local DIY Mommy legend, Christina Dennis, and
- Jenna Pryor, owner and senior designer at Edmonton-local Plum Design.
What’s Hot: 2022 Interior Design Trends
As you can see, Jennifer (@turquoisechair on Insta) has designed and staged some truly stunning spaces. I was so excited to pick her brain about what we can expect this upcoming year!
Jennifer, what do you predict will be some of the biggest home decor and interior design trends in 2022?
The past few years have been a bit rough, pandemic and all. 2022 is going to be somewhat easy on us as far as design trends, with cozy interiors, vintage remixes and playful furniture being popular, to name a few.
With the world in lockdown-mode, comfort became a priority in many aspects of our lives, from the way we dress to the way we relax. This year we will see a lot of cozy and curvy furniture, boucle’s and soft velvet. Imagine large, comfy sectionals that allow you to stretch out and relax.
Also popular are creamy, warm walls versus stark white. Plus, organic elements like sisal area rugs, rattan light fixtures and furniture.
Mixing in antiques and vintage finds adds another layer of interest to your home and always sparks up good conversation. Whether you add a mid-century-inspired chair to your living room or an antique chest of drawers in your foyer, you can make it your own by changing out the hardware or paint color. I’m loving this trend for 2022!
What colour palettes do you predict will have a moment in 2022?
Nature-inspired colours, like leafy greens, earthy browns, cognac and burnt umber will be popular.
I feel like natural surfaces and decorative accents were big last year. Marble, wood, clay, stoneware. Still in?
Definitely. Natural stone is a classic and timeless element. You will still see marble-inspired counters and backsplashes, but more so in quartz versus real marble for better durability.
What can we expect in terms of popular furniture?
Curvy furniture – its whimsical and fun appeal is just what need! From arched book cases to a curved sofa, they’re perfect for breaking up the straight lines in a room.
Many of us added houseplants to our home throughout the pandemic, as well as dried floral likes pampas and palm fronds. What are your predictions for this year?
It’s always great to bring the outdoors in! This is an ongoing trend.
Very Peri Pantone Color of the Year – thoughts?
I used to have a slight obsession with purple and periwinkle growing up, so for me I am a little over this color.
However, it’s a super playful colour and exudes joy. I think this color would be fun to accessorize with, from toss cushions to art, small kitchen appliances and dishes.
Thank you so much to Jennifer Hughes for sharing her insight! Be sure to stop by and check out the main stage, featuring a few design elements popular for 2022!
