This summer we celebrated my husband’s 40th birthday at Disneyland with our son and daughter and it was truly one of the most amazing trips we’ve ever taken. The magic. The thrills. The excitement. A trip to Disneyland is truly an experience unlike any other.
With our 4 and 6-year-olds in tow, a non-negotiable for me this trip was staying walking distance from the park. In past, my husband and I have stayed at hotels a bus-ride distance away… something that’s never fun to deal with after a long day.
We landed on the Howard Johnson Anaheim Hotel (loving called the HOJO Anaheim) and I’m so glad we did. Here’s why:
5 reasons we loved staying at the HOJO Anaheim Hotel Near Disneyland
1. Splash Park and Garden Pool
I think the first thing that caught my eye when looking for hotels close to Disneyland was HOJO’s pirate-themed splash park.
It was a great size for our kids. We spent a whole morning here!
We also spent a full afternoon lounging and swimming in the intimate Garden Pool.
2. Close to Disneyland
Talk about convenient! The HOJO is just a 7-minute walk from the Disneyland gates… making getting to and from the park so easy.
3. Family-friendly Rooms
Built with families in mind, the HOJO Anaheim has numerous room types to choose from.
Although originally built in 1956, the property is currently undergoing renovations. I recommend our newly renovated Deluxe Pool View Room in Building 2 – it had everything we needed for a comfortable stay (and the kids loved the fun, bright decor). Also, the bathroom lighting was amazing for doing makeup, haha.
When you’re browsing all the rooms online, my recommendation is Building 2, where we stayed – or Building 1. Building 2 was completely renovated as of April 2020 and Building 1 was completely renovated in 2018.
I didn’t have a chance to see Buildings 3 through 6 but to my understanding, they will be undergoing renovations soon!

4. Historied Property
Built in 1965, the HOJO Anaheim has been a home-base for Disneyland travellers for decades – including me! I actually first stayed at the HOJO with my parents and sisters as a teenager.
I love that the grounds have a historied charm – you can feel it as you walk along the tree-lined paths.
5. Great Amenities Nearby
Whether you’re looking to grab a bite to eat before heading into the park… or need something at midnight after closing down the park, I appreciated that there were various restaurant options nearby. We chose to do breakfast each day at the onsite restaurant, Mimi’s Café, where servings were big and the front desk gave us a coupon for 20% off!
The hotel also had a really reasonably-priced gift shop (where we grabbed a few canned cocktails to enjoy by the pool).
As well, other restaurants nearby included McDonald’s, Starbucks, IHOP and Panera Bread.
Lastly, HOJO Anaheim has free Wi-Fi internet access which was great – I was able to keep my phone on airplane mode the whole time which saved me a chunk of change on my phone bill!
