How to Make a Floating Lemon Vase

This summer I’ve been ALL about decorating with lemons. Bowls, baskets and trays of the pretty yellow fruit have adorned my tablescapes and kitchen counters. And now, with summer winding to an end but the sun still shining strong, I’ve decided to try my hand at something I first saw on Pinterest a few years back: a floating lemon vase!

I’m actually kicking myself for not making one sooner: they are so pretty and so easy to make. Thought I’d share a few tips in case you’d like to whip up a floating lemon vase of your own.

Here’s how to make a floating lemon vase:

  1. You’ll need two clear glass vases, sized so that one fits inside the other with enough of a gap between them to position the lemon slices.
Hint: The vases can be small or large and a variety of shapes – like traditional cylinder or square vases, jugs or mason jars. It just depends on the look you’re going for!
  2. Place the smaller vase inside the larger one.
  3. Slice lemons about ¼ inch thick. If desired, remove the seeds.

  4. Arrange the lemons in the gap between the two vases, starting at the bottom and overlapping slices as you work your way up.
Hint: I used a thin skewer to help position the lemons where I wanted them.
  5. Pour fresh water into the inner vase. Then, carefully pour water over the lemons in the outer vase (if you pour water into the lemons first, your inner vase may float!)
  6. Arrange the flowers in the inner glass.
Hint: to increase your flowers’ longevity, strip the leaves below the water line. Otherwise, they’ll deteriorate and rot.

  7. As with any flower arrangement, trim the flower stems daily. Change the water daily – or at least every two days. Also, cut flowers prefer cooler temperatures so avoid putting them in direct sunlight as this will cause them to overheat and wilt.

I’m looking forward to making more of these vases in the future! Perhaps next time I’ll experiment with grapefruit, lime or oranges!
