Giant Raspberry Sangria

A wineglass the size of your head is pretty great. But when that wineglass is full of Raspberry Sangria? Well – it doesn’t get much better than that!

The other weekend, Aaron and I went out to our friends’ lake with this ginormous glass (we knew it would be good for a laugh) and a few bottles of The Other Red in tow.

The Other Red is a fruit wine from Barr Estate Winery, made with hand-picked, fully ripe raspberries. It was my first time trying a raspberry wine and I was a fan – it had a pleasing full flavour. Plus, I loved that is was made only a short drive down the freeway in Sherwood Park, Alberta.

Turns out that full flavour was the PERFECT ingredient to whip up a ‘red’ raspberry sangria that, according to my husband, was the best sangria he’s ever had in his life.

I made note of the ingredients, as Aaron requested that I whip it up again, and good thing – I received a few requests for the recipe after posting the above photo on Instagram.

For your reference, the giant glass’ capacity is 5.75 litres (or 6 quarts, 1.5 gallons or 192 ounces) – which is the same size as your typical beverage dispenser. So – clearly – I didn’t drink this alone. We actually shared it amongst seven of us, making this recipe perfect if you’re whipping up a casual party-sized jug.

Giant Raspberry Sangria

Yields one 5.75 litre jug

You’ll need:

  • 2 oranges, sliced
  • 2 peaches, sliced
  • 2 lemons, sliced
  • Ice
  • 2 bottles of The Other Red raspberry wine
  • 375 mL of Peach Schnapps
  • Club Soda, to top

Directions:

Add the fresh fruit slices to your jug and muddle with a muddler or wooden spoon. Add the Peach Schnapps and muddle again to combine. Then add the raspberry wine and stir to incorporate.

Good things come to those who wait, so I highly suggest covering and refrigerating it for between 1 and 8 hours. This step isn’t necessary, but will help make a more flavourful cocktail.

Then, fill the jug with ice and stir. Top with club soda. Serve as is, or into glasses (or in our case that day, SOLO cups – haha) filled with ice.

We garnished our oversized wine glass with an entire lemon for fun – but feel free to garnish with sliced lemon, peach or orange.
