Losing sleep trying to find the perfect mattress? Tired of researching different brands on the market?
I don’t blame you – we spend a third of our lives asleep, so choosing a comfortable yet supportive mattress is essential to a good night’s rest. But, oh boy, are there ever a lot of options out there! Today I’m taking a bit of the guesswork out of the process for anyone eyeing up the Endy or IKEA Amsosen mattresses.
Full disclosure: I received both mattresses from Endy free of charge to conduct this review and all thoughts are my own (and my husband’s too – it was a team effort)!
My IKEA vs Endy Mattress Review
Overview:
- Switching to an Endy has given us the best nights’ sleep and eliminated my back pain
- It’s the perfect level of firmness to offer both comfort and support
- By comparison, we found the IKEA mattress too firm to be comfortable – it’s a no from us
- The IKEA mattress also had a chemical smell that stuck around for more than a week. We loved that the Endy mattress foam is CertiPUR-US certified and doesn’t contain harmful chemicals, making it safe for your home
- Given all that plus the cost comparison (the Endy king-size mattress is $995 compared to $1,099 for the IKEA), Endy is the clear choice
Why We Needed A New Mattress
This summer, Aaron and I took on the challenge of doing a little ‘sleepsearch’.
Over the past six months, we’ve both been waking up and sharing tales of back pain – a symptom we both attributed to the joy of growing older. I realized, however, that the problem might be our plush mattress.
One night I lay stretched out in my son’s Endy double bed, comforting him after a nightmare, and couldn’t help but notice how much firmer and more supportive his mattress felt compared to my own. When I woke up the next morning, my back felt GREAT.
But how rested would I feel on an Endy, night after night?
Sleep Experience: Endy King – 10/10
A month after sleeping on our Endy mattress, Aaron and I are both thrilled with our quality of sleep, how comfortable the mattress is and how it’s alleviated our back pain.
I’d describe the mattress as medium-firm, which is ideal. I’m a combination back and side sleeper and I like that the Endy mattress has a bit of ‘hug’ to it so you can really settle in and get comfy, while also feeling supported.
Endy mattresses are made right here in Canada and have three layers of foam, which work together to:
- Support and evenly distribute pressure points on your body, so you toss and turn less
- Provide zero motion transfer between you and your partner (and, in our case, cat)
- Keep you cool and comfortable throughout the night (which I really appreciate as a hot sleeper)
And it’s a small detail but one you don’t find often: I really like the micro-quilted mattress cover. It’s soft, breathable and fully removable so you can toss it in the washing machine to keep everything feeling fresh.
Sleep Experience: IKEA Amsosen – 3/10
My time staying in a dorm room during university was brief and uncomfortable, and that experience is exactly what came to mind while sleeping on the IKEA Amsosen mattress.
One benefit was no snoring from my husband Aaron: after two restless nights, he resigned himself to the basement for the remainder of the month to sleep on our old mattress. It’s his busy season at work and he couldn’t risk losing out on proper rest.
For me, it’s a hard pass too… on account of it being so hard.
Even after a month, it continued to have little to no ‘hug’ – it’s a very firm mattress. While I appreciated the support, it was too far of a departure from what I find comfortable.
About The Brands
When making a major purchase – whether it’s a new car or a new sofa – I always like to read about the companies I’m supporting and buy local when I can.
Endy
What initially drew me to Endy is that their mattresses are proudly Canadian-made. Their latex-free foam is poured locally at facilities in Ontario and Quebec and is CertiPUR-US certified, meaning it’s safe from VOCs, formaldehyde and phthalates.
As well, the Endy mattress meets rigorous standards for providing a healthier air quality inside your home, so you can sleep soundly knowing this product is super safe! It’s no surprise it has a 4.9/5-star rating on more than 30,000 customer reviews.
IKEA
Established in Sweden in 1943, IKEA is praised for its stylish, assemble-yourself products at affordable prices. It currently operates in 50 countries worldwide, with most of its manufacturing taking place in China, Poland, Italy, Germany and Sweden. Among IKEA’s broad range of home products, they offer several mattresses, which customers can purchase in-store or online.
Endy Delivery and Unboxing Experience
The Endy delivery and unboxing experience was seamless.
I ordered my mattress and pillows on a Friday (shipping across Canada is free) and they were on my doorstep that Monday in a box the size of a hockey bag.
The mattress box has handholds, so it was really easy to move upstairs. Upon taking it out of the box, our mattress looked a bit like a Swiss roll – but not for long. Within seconds of unrolling it, it expanded back to its regular size.
IKEA Delivery and Unboxing Experience
IKEA offers two options for purchasing a mattress: picking it up in-store or ordering it online, with delivery starting at $59.
I chose to order online and was able to select a date and 2-hour time window for delivery. Everything went smoothly – IKEA did call to see if they could come two hours early as they were in the neighborhood, but it all worked out as I was home anyway.
The mattress was rolled up in plastic, making it easy to transport upstairs.
Something I found really nauseating, though, is that for about a week and a half, the mattress had a very strong, chemical smell. And oh boy, did it linger. Not the sort of thing you want in your house, especially when you have young children.
If you buy this mattress and have the space in your home, I’d suggest opening it and airing it out in a different room for a few days before sleeping on it for the first time.
Endy Risk-Free Trial and Warranty
I take a lot of comfort (pun fully intended 😉) in Endy’s risk-free 100 Night Trial and limited 15 Year Warranty, knowing they stand by their product.
If, after three months, you determine that Endy isn’t your vibe, they’ll pick it up (no need to put it back in the box!) and grant a full refund. As well, Endy works with charity partners across the country to donate these new and gently-used mattresses to people in need.
IKEA Mattress Exchange and Warranty
IKEA offers a 10-year guarantee against defects in materials and workmanship. Customers also have 90 nights to try out the Amsosen and if it’s not for them, they can do a one-time exchange for another IKEA mattress style.
They don’t offer a risk-free, money-back trial program.
Final Verdict: IKEA vs Endy Mattress Review
Although the Endy king mattress ($995) and IKEA Amsosen king mattress ($1,099) are both foam mattresses, there is no comparison in terms of quality and comfort. In our opinion, Endy is the clear winner.
If you’re looking for a mattress that’s supportive, comfortable, made in Canada and has a no-risk trial and great warranty, I encourage you to give Endy a try. As for IKEA: they’ll always have my love and support when it comes to the KALLAX home organizing system… but I’m going to pass on sleeping on any more of their mattresses anytime soon.
Thank you for stopping by to read my IKEA vs Endy mattress review.
Please note: this blog post and the opinions reflected are my own. The mattresses reviewed (Endy and IKEA) were thoroughly tested prior to an overall winner being selected. Endy provided mattresses for testing and review purposes.
