Okayyyyyy, I can’t get over how cute these DIY gift boxes turned out!
Elle and I made this decoupage craft on a whim yesterday as something special for her Nana for Mother’s Day and the process went so smoothly, I just had to share.
Full disclosure: when it comes to crafting, my skill level is on par with my daughter (and she’s 4). So when I say these DIY gift boxes were easy to make, I mean it!
To make this craft, all you’re going to need is:
- A box
- Some Mod Podge
- A brush
- A pretty napkin or two
All About Decoupage
Decoupage is a crafting technique that involves affixing paper decorations to a hard surface with glue. I got the idea to decoupage with a patterned napkin when I saw my girlfriend Ash from dashlifestyles.com transform a dollar store watering can into a decor piece with serious Anthro vibes.
Over the last few months, I’ve saved a stack of pretty white boxes from various deliveries and figured it would be fun to add a little ooh-la-la.
What Is Mod Podge Anyway?
Mod Podge is an all-in-one decoupage glue, sealer and finish that’s quick drying for multiple coat build up. It dries clear and is easily sanded to a smooth, glossy finish.
I first bought it years ago to create some glittery vases for our wedding but love it for kids crafts because it’s non-toxic and cleans up easily with soap and water.
How We Made the DIY Gift Boxes
Elle’s 4 so we made this craft together.
First, I let her go to town, brushing on a layer of Mod Podge over the top of the lid. Then, I helped her smooth on the napkin – applying more glue and tucking in the corners as needed. We then finished it off with two more layers of Mod Podge, ensuring the napkin was fully covered in glue. It was that simple!
Our napkin was quite thick so we didn’t have any concerns with it ripping or tearing.
Also, if you find a napkin with a larger design, you can cut out the different shapes and affix each image individually, as opposed to using the entire napkin as one big sheet.
Hope you have fun with this one. Happy crafting!
