I’m in full-on pregnancy nesting mode over here and my latest project is upgrading our bright and cozy master bedroom into a restful sanctuary. Right now the room is completely empty. We sold or donated all our furniture, and Aaron and I have been spending the last few weekends dressing up the walls with some wainscoting.

But for four years I really did enjoy our master bedroom, and thought I’d give a tour of how this space used to look!

Cozy master bedroom furniture

Since moving into our home four years ago, our master bedroom has remained virtually unchanged. The highlight of this space is a custom-made, grey panelled queen bed from Canada-based Urban Barn.  I really love it! It’s such great quality.

I know some of my readers aren’t in Canada, or might find the $1,650 price point a bit too high, so I’m sharing some similar, more affordable options:

Our bedside tables and chest of drawers are plain white, making them versatile for styling with fresh flowers and decor.

And one of my favourite design elements is our white window shutters. They’re elegant in their simplicity and work amazing at blocking out the sun. I’m a total vampire and need complete darkness when I sleep!

Cozy master bedroom accent decor

I paired cozy dove grey bedding with plush Mongolian sheepskin pillows and a luxurious merino wool blanket to create a layered, textured space.

I love soft, romantic lighting which is why I’m a fan of twinkle lights, lanterns and flameless candles to add a bit of ambience.

I also have the light on our white and silver fan on a dimmer. I’d love to have a chandelier in this space – but the fan is a necessity for staying cool on hot summer nights!

I was also thrilled to come across a multi-colored rug at HomeSense Canada! It’s gorgeous but I haven’t been successful at finding the same brand online. Thought I’d share a few similar styles:

Why I’m refreshing our cozy master bedroom

Wondering why we’re changing our master bedroom?

The prospect of a few months of sleepless nights with a newborn really made me look critically at our sleeping situation. At eight years old, our mattress was getting uncomfortable and needed replaced. So Aaron and I went mattress shopping and decided to upgrade from a queen to a king. The only downside? We’d need a new bed and bedding.

Given that our previously-owned bedside tables were in rough shape, we figured now was the perfect time to transform a room we liked into the bedroom of our dreams!

As much as I enjoyed the years we spent in our old room, I’m SO excited to refresh this space!
