Modern medicine. Air conditioning. E-commerce. Airplanes. There are so many inventions I’m thankful for. But bright and early in the morning, when Elle’s ready to go-go-go and I’m still half asleep, I praise all advancements related to coffee.
One woman who deserves to be celebrated by all coffee lovers is Melitta Bentz. This German girlfriend had the foresight over a century ago, all the way back in 1908, to invent the coffee filter. That’s right, she was sick of drinking her cup of joe full of bitter grounds, so she punched holes in a brass pot, lined it with a piece of her son’s notebook paper and created a filter. Genius!
The Melitta Pour-Over Coffeemaker
Given Melitta’s innovative contribution, I was understandably quite excited when her namesake company asked me to try out their Melitta Pour-Over Coffeemaker.
Now, I’m just going to come clean: I’m a total coffee snob. Instant coffee? Ya, never tasted it. Never will. I actually didn’t start drinking coffee until my 20s during a three-month trip through Europe, so it’s safe to say my standards were set pretty high right from the start.
And while I love treating myself to luxurious coffeeshop beverages, I ammmmm a stay-at-home Mum, so finding something delicious yet affordable is the best of both worlds. And I’m happy to report that Melitta helped me achieve that balance!
Three Steps for the Perfect Cup of Coffee
The Melitta pour-over method brews a coffeehouse-quality cup of the good stuff in these three simple steps:
1) Place a Melitta filter inside the Pour-Over coffeemaker
Did you know that it’s SO important to pick a good coffee filter? It helps remove contaminants and oils that lead to bitterness, producing a richer, smoother cup of coffee. And in case you’re wondering, because I know I was, Melitta filters are 100 percent biodegradable.
2) Add fresh-grounded coffee
Did you know that your coffee’s freshness is just as important as the overall quality of the coffee? Ideally, start with a premium-quality coffee, like an Arabica bean. And whether using bean or ground, be sure to store your coffee free of oxygen, light, heat, and moisture to maintain maximum freshness.
3) Pour water off the boiler, saturating the coffee
The flow of water is regulated by a hole in the bottom of the cone, ensuring a perfectly brewed cup!
Other Perks of the Melitta Pour-Over Coffeemaker
In addition to producing a great tasting cup of coffee, I love that my Melitta coffeemaker is pink. LOL!
But seriously, it’s super easy to clean (the exact opposite of a French press!), which is convenient for this busy Mum but would also be helpful in an office setting.
It’s also a great size. I mean, hello, some coffeemakers are huge!
If you’d like to treat yourself to a Melitta of your own, don’t worry, you won’t break the bank because they’re super affordable. Melitta Pour-Over coffeemakers start at only $6.99, and my lovely porcelain carafe set is $44.99. Plus, if you use the code Holly15% at shop.melitta.ca, you can get a discount.
