Our Blush Spring Table
When I think about spring, pastel tones and fresh flowers immediately come to mind. And so, this weekend when I refreshed my dining room tabletop decor for the new season, I decided to feature my favourite hue: blush pink.
I absolutely love dressing up our table to coincide with the seasons and holidays. But I remember, not all that long ago, when it seemed like a daunting task. However, it doesn’t need to be! Here are three simple steps that I follow when designing tablescapes:
1. Select a Colour Palette
I always begin by choosing a focal colour or colour palette for my tablescape. I find that once I select a colour palette, it becomes easier to map out the rest of my table and all the other details fall into place.
This time around, I’m sure it comes as no surprise that my pastel-loving heart decided to bust out the blush!
I just found the most gorgeous dinnerware at Hudson’s Bay and could not wait to style it: GlucksteinHome’s Allegra Organic Stoneware Dinnerware set in blush (though it also comes in grey).
I was immediately drawn to the dinnerware’s pretty, feminine tone and its soft, organic shape reminiscent of wheel-thrown pottery. I knew it would look absolutely show-stopping on my table!
Plus, each microwave- and dishwasher-safe 16-piece set includes four dinner plates, side plates, bowls and mugs. That’s all the dinnerware you’d need to host the perfect brunch, coffee and all!
2. Incorporate Fresh or Natural Elements
Natural elements, such as fresh florals, greenery, fruits or vegetables, are key to making a tablescape memorable. They’re a great way to add volume, height, colour – and even a refreshing fragrance – to your table.
So can we just stop for a second and swoon over this pretty centerpiece by my incredibly talented friends over at Fleurs Flowers? I just can’t get enough of it – from the fluffy white hydrangeas to the blush peonies and muted eucalyptus.
If you’re anything like me, you’d want to hold onto this floral arrangement for as long as possible. Fortunately, I have a few tips from the Fleurs Flowers team to keep your blooms looking fresh and to extend their lifespan:
- Get your flowers into water as soon as you can
- If designing your own arrangement, strip all the greens that will be submerged in water
- Change your water daily – or at least every two days
- Trim the stems at an angle daily
- Cut flowers prefer cooler temperatures so avoid putting them in direct sunlight as this will cause them to overheat and wilt
- If you were thinking about storing your flowers in the refrigerator overnight, don’t! Our fridges at home often run colder than florists’, which can cause the flowers to freeze and wilt. Plus, fruits and veggies emit gases that are toxic to flowers
3. Add texture and vary height
Lastly, I always love to create visual interest by layering textures and varying the heights of my tabletop decor.
I chose to add texture by dressing my brown wooden table with several layers, including a light blue table runner, neutral woven placemats, white table throw and hand-knotted cotton napkins.
I placed a mirrored tray in the center of the table to hold and reflect my floral centerpiece, which I complemented with shorter glass candles and taller mercury glass candle pillars.
And remember: when adding height, always keep your guests in mind and avoid positioning anything at eyelevel that might obstruct their view of one another!
