Our family loves a good trip to the Canadian Rocky Mountains to take in the natural beauty of the region and visit my father-in-law, who lives in Canmore. Earlier this month, we enjoyed a stunning weekend away at Basecamp Lodge Canmore, soaking up the sunshine and autumn views. Not to mention, enjoying some great food and drinks at several Canmore restaurants.
Taking In the Mountain Views
If you’ve never taken a trip to the mountains during fall, I can’t recommend it enough. Autumn in Canmore is on another level. It’s truly breathtaking seeing the different coloured trees set against a bluebird sky, surrounded by crystal lakes and towering mountains.
This trip we enjoyed taking some leisurely, family-friendly walks including:
- Revelling at the aqua-blue water of Two Jack Lake and hopping over some rocks with the kids to its miniature island.
- Taking an interpretive walk around the remains of Lower Bankhead, an abandoned coal mining town in Banff that ceased operations in 1922.
- Exploring the shore around Lake Minnewanka. For those with young kids, this is a scenic but easy walk with a stroller-friendly pathway.
Retiring To Our Cozy Room At Basecamp Lodge Canmore
Basecamp Lodge Canmore is a timber-framed building featuring 28 hotel-style rooms and 2 micro-suites with kitchens.
Location
Located right on Bow Valley Trail, Basecamp Lodge Canmore is well-situated. It took us only ten minutes to walk into the heart of downtown Canmore and 20 minutes to drive into Banff. Plus, the hotel offers complimentary cruiser bicycles if you’d prefer to travel by bike.
Also, it’s surrounded by some great dining options, including Rocky Mountain Bagel Co., BLAKE Restaurant and Le founil Bakery.
Hotel Amenities and Complimentary Breakfast
Every morning we received a breakfast crate filled with juices, fresh fruit, baked goods and snacks which was super convenient with the kids.
The hotel also includes a cedar-enclosed dry sauna and a Great Room with panoramic views of Mount Lady Macdonald.
Affordable pricing
Over the years, we’ve stayed at our fair share of hotels in Canmore and Banff and I was definitely a fan of the more affordable rates at Basecamp Lodge Canmore.
We stayed in a Deluxe Double Queen Room, which was spacious and clean with a gas fireplace and complimentary wifi. While I’d recommend looking into the neighbouring property, Basecamp Resorts, if you’re looking for a more luxe mountain experience with a rooftop hot tub, I know we’ll personally look to return to the Basecamp Lodge when we want a simple, comfortable place to stay at a price that won’t break the bank!
Canmore Dining
For a town of its size, Canmore sure has an incredible culinary scene. Over the last decade, Aaron and I have eaten our way through a large amount of them – in fact, I rounded up all our favourites in my Best Canmore Restaurants blog post.
This trip, we visited a few on that list, including:
- Chef’s Studio Japan for ramen and sushi with the kids.
- Craig’s Way Station, a charming, traditional diner that serves up hearty breakfasts (including waffles and ice cream).
- Fergus & Bix for late-night happy hour.
- Bar Déjà Vu, a sexy speak easy in downtown Canmore with moody lighting and an incredible cocktail list.
